About Sarah
Sarah Johansson Locke is a catalyst for creativity, inquiry, and vitality. Her work is dedicated to creating opportunities for people to learn about themselves, each other, and the world around them in order to live more engaged and fulfilling lives.
Sarah has worked across the US and in Europe as an educator, facilitator, program designer, company director, performer, choreographer, and consultant. An ISMETA Registered Somatic Movement Educator/Therapist, Sarah is a graduate of the Embodied Anatomy and Yoga program of the School for Body-Mind Centering, and holds an MA in Dance Education from the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. She has extensive training and certifications in several forms of dance, yoga, meditation, and somatics.
Her research and practice explores the inherent and integral role of embodiment in personal transformation, collective cultures and communication, and social justice; questions of intercultural and transcultural exchange in relation to tradition, innovation, lineage, and diaspora; and centers the emergent and generative potentials of creative process, experiential learning, contemplative practices, and collaborative exchange.
. . . . . . . . .
As the founder and artistic director of Alchemy Dance Theater, Sarah was at the forefront of establishing and cultivating the NYC contemporary transcultural fusion dance scene starting in 2000. Having studied on the west coast, she came back to New York (where she was born and raised) to share and evolve this work, building a community that thrived as dancers and musicians collaborated, and students went on to become performers, choreographers, and teachers.
With ADT as well as in collaboration with other companies and independent artists, she has curated and produced events, designed and hosted visiting artist programs, taught classes and workshops, choreographed, and performed. She has been involved with projects ranging from site-specific installations and street theater to international arts festivals and large theater productions.
As an arts educator and program director, Sarah has experience in holistic education, curriculum design, professional development for teachers and artists, and program development, implementation, and evaluation. She has worked with independent and public schools, city and state agencies, dance studios, and arts and cultural organizations.
As a wellness practitioner, Sarah has worked with individuals and groups using modalities including yoga, creative movement, somatics, embodied anatomy, meditation and mindfulness, and other healing arts and energy practices. She has brought this work to people of all ages in a variety of settings.
AlchemyCatalyst is an evolution of her wide-ranging experience, integrating principles and practices from the arts, education, and wellness to create transformation and thriving for individuals and organizations.
